Frequently asked questions

How long does CBT take?

The length of care depends on the nature of your symptoms, your treatment goals, and the degree of ongoing active participation in the process. Overall, CBT is designed to be directed and efficient. The first few sessions include history taking, data collection on your symptoms, and education. When active treatment begins, the treatment process often includes readings, practice of skill development and implementation, and in visit re-assessments of your progress. You may find that you derive significant benefit in only a few meetings, but it generally takes at least several meetings to begin to experience results. The frequency of visits will often decrease over time, as a person develops skills that can be used more independently. Treatment can either conclude at this point, or a person may continue in less frequent, maintenance visits.

Who is a good candidate for CBT?

When you no longer feel that your symptoms work for you, you may be ready for CBT. CBT is best designed for people that want to participate in an active process in their care and are open to changing their approach to symptom management.

What if I don't know where to start?

If you are not sure how to begin, you can schedule an intake. In this meeting, we will comprehensively cover your history as well as your goals for care. If I am not the best fit for your situation, I will provide you with referrals and help to coordinate care. If you would like an introduction to CBT, but are not yet ready to commit to the treatment process, you may benefit from a few meetings to explore CBT.

Does my insurance cover therapy?

In order to answer this question, please contact the customer service number on the back of your insurance card. Ask the customer service representative about out-of-network provider benefits. At each visit, I will give you a receipt that indicates your payment and contains the necessary information to submit a claim to your insurance company. If treatment authorization is required, I will contact your insurance company with your consent. Anything not covered by insurance may also qualify for submission to a flexible health spending account. I am registered for credit card processing as a healthcare provider.

What if my benefits are limited?

I am aware that this is a challenging situation. It is important to note that CBT is designed to be targeted and also to teach skills that can be self-applied outside of therapy. Therefore, this may be an important consideration in your choice of healthcare.
